Meeting Reports
|
Aug 12, 2022

Summary
The 8th annual SCAPE conference took place at the Holiday Inn hotel in Newport News, Virginia on July 2, 2022. The meeting started at 8am and ended that evening with a closing ceremony which included performances and awards. The performances included dances and martial arts. Awards were given to members who made special contributions to the society over the past year, and volunteers who helped with design, logistics, set-up, and other various essential tasks. There were over 200 physicians and guests from Virginia to California and many states in-between.
The conference consisted of talks, workshops, and panel discussions which covered a broad range of topics including, but not limited to, biotherapeutics presentations, an integrative Oncology panel, and panel discussion focused on physician wellness, including retirement planning, nutrition, physical and mental wellbeing. The Oncology panel was of great interest as it discussed early cancer detection and diagnosis as well as prevention, providing examples of specific lifestyle changes that can be incorporated for tangible benefits. The SCAPE leadership designed an intentionally holistic lecture series, including both intellectually stimulating discussions and talks regarding personal wellbeing. This is particularly important as physicians often prioritize their patient’s physical and mental wellbeing over their own and require reminders to tend to themselves. Two talks that directly contributed to the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute’s (TCCI) goal of advancing the understanding of the human brain and mind were Dr. Lin Zhang’s presentation on neurodegeneration and the keynote speaker, Dr. David Anderson’s presentation on the neural circuitry of psychiatric illnesses.
